Circularity

To determine if a lesion's border is rough or jagged, we find the maximum area and perimeter of the segmented region using regionprops() in Matlab. Next, we use the circularity equation shown to the right, which outputs a numerical value. If the value is 1, then the area is a perfect circle. Therefore, our algorithm classifies the area as being melanoma is the circularity value is greater than 1.5, which corresponds to a uneven and jagged border.
